Bioenvironmental Engineering (BEE)

Bioenvironmental Engineering, or BE, provides relevant and timely occupational and environmental health risk assessments as part of preventive medicine to support Department of the Air Force operations worldwide. We recommend mitigating measures to sustain and, where possible, enhance mission effectiveness. Our four main areas of expertise include radiation, industrial hygiene, environmental protection, and emergency response.

Services Offered

Indoor Air Quality

For all indoor air quality, or IAQ, concerns, such as mold, humidity, or temperature, follow the steps provided:

1. Call your building facility manager, or FM
2. Communicate your concerns to the FM
3. The FM will create a work order ticket for Civil Engineering, or CE
4. CE will receive the ticket
5. After CE receives the ticket, they will call the BE shop to schedule an IAQ assessment

Air Quality Index

The Air Quality Index, or AQI, is a measurement of the air quality in our area due to factors such as fire or weather. Follow these steps to check the index:

1. Visit the AirNow website
2. Input your corresponding ZIP code for current outdoor air quality results, or do both:

Fit Tests

We offer fit tests for both respirators and gas masks

• Respirators (specific to your shop and hazards):

1. Ensure your shop supervisor adds you to the Aeromedical Services Information Management System, or ASIMS, roster. You can contact Public Health at 609-794-9356 to confirm your addition.
2. Complete the Medical Evaluation Questionnaire, or MEQ, and submit it. You must wait to schedule a respirator fit test until your MEQ is signed and approved.
   • You must re-accomplish your MEQ upon arrival at a new duty station.
   • Coordinate with your shop Respiratory Protection Administrator to ensure you have the correct respirator information before you complete your MEQ.
   • Work with your leadership to ensure your MEQ is approved before you schedule an appointment with BE.
3. Use the BE Fit Test Scheduling Link to schedule a new fit test
4. For a current fit test completed within the last year, call BE at 609-754-9057.

Gas Masks (required for all personnel)

• If you have been fit tested by BE in the past and need copies of your report, please call BE at 609-754-9057
• For an initial gas mask fit test, use the BE Fit Test Scheduling Link to schedule a new test

Water Buffalo Tanks

1. Locate the inspection certificate on the water buffalo tank. Ensure the empty tank has been inspected by Army Preventive Medicine, or Preventive Medicine, within the last 12 months. You can reach the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, or JBMDL, Army Preventive Medicine office at 609-754-9457, 609-754-9198, or 609-754-9501.

2. After the inspection is complete, you must sanitize the tank.

3. Contact BE for water potability testing at 609-754-9057. Please provide the following information:
   • Date of the event
   • Date testing is needed. When you select a testing date, it must be at least 24 hours before the event starts. Results from the sample take 24 hours to process. For example, if your event is on a Saturday, have the sampling completed on Friday.

Ensure you meet the following prerequisites before contacting BE, or we will turn you away:

Water Sampling

• For questions about base drinking water, visit the JBMDL Annual Consumer Confidence Report
• We do not perform one-time sampling for items like water fountains or ice machines.
• Discolored water is a temporary issue usually caused by routine line maintenance or hydrant flushing, which stirs up natural iron sediments in the pipes. It does not pose a health risk. Simply run your cold-water tap for up to 30 minutes until the water flows clear. If the water remains discolored after running it, contact your building facility manager immediately so we can investigate.

Hazardous Noise

If you suspect that you are exposed to hazardous noise from new or old equipment, contact BE at 609-754-9057.

Radiation

If you are bringing radioactive materials onto the installation or have radiation safety concerns, contact BE at 609-754-9057.
